Prompted by spiraling
energy costs and environmental concerns,
many people have placed a new emphasis
on minimizing energy use. A good place
to start, according to Izzy of Capital
Home Builders & Developers Inc., is at
home. Heating, lighting and cooling, not
to mention food storage and cooking, all
take energy.
"Buildings now use about half the
nation's energy," Izzy said.
Fortunately, there are approaches to new
home construction that can lower that
figure without compromising comfort or
aesthetics.
"Many of the building
techniques and systems that reduce
energy usage can more than pay for
themselves," Izzy said. "Energy-saving
steps that add, perhaps, $150 to the
monthly mortgage payment could well save
the homeowner $250 a month in utility
bills."
Making a structure more
energy efficient can also reduce some
construction costs. As an example, Izzy
said better insulation can allow a
builder to use smaller, less costly
heating and cooling systems.Energy
Star has urged the construction industry
to build more energy-efficient homes for
years, Izzy said. And while many builders in the
South Georgia are are not incorporating
advanced techniques in their designs,
Izzy has gone a step further. He tests
each home to certify that it achieves a
higher performance level.
