The City of Valdosta has a mayor/council form of government.
The eight council members are elected to staggered four-year
terms. The council employs a full-time city manager. Lowndes
County operates with a four-member Board of Commissioners
elected to four-year terms. A professional county manager
acts as the chief administrative officer.

Georgia plates with ten days of establishing residence
(military personnel excepted) and pay an auto ad valorem tax
at the same time. Call (229) 333-5108. An out-of-state
driver's license is invalid when you establish residence in
Georgia (military personnel excepted). Contact the Georgia
State Patrol (229) 333-5217 on Madison Hwy. (State Rd. 31)
south of Valdosta. Licenses are issued Tuesday, Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday from 9 am-4:30 pm.

Call 911 for all police
and fire emergencies. The Valdosta police (229) 242-2606
acts as the emergency operations center for Valdosta. The
Sheriff's Department (229) 333-5149 enforces laws in the
unincorporated area of Lowndes County. The Georgia State
Patrol maintains an office in Valdosta on Gill Harbin
Industrial Blvd. and can be reached by calling (229)
333-5215.
The Valdosta Fire Department (229) 333-1835, is a class
three fire service, services 47,500 people in 28 square
miles with six fire stations.
The cities of Lake Park and Hahira have their own small
police departments. Valdosta State University and Moody Air
Force Base also have their own security forces.
